Layers, On Layers, On Layers

Red Washington Square Park

Layers are key to survival in New York in February. Especially since I decided to move when it just happens to be the coldest February in more than a century!! A century people!! The last time it was this cold was the year of The Great Gold Crash, “Black Friday” and I’m not talking about the day after Thanksgiving midnight madness.
Now how does one stay warm and still be fashionably fierce?

Houston’s Fashion Influencer with JW Marriott and David Peck

Yesterday I teamed up with five other fashionistas, to show off designer David Peck’s latest CrOp. Selected as one of Houston’s fashionable influencers by JW Marriott, I styled my own look from Peck’s F/W 14 collection. Today I have a sneak peek for you!!

David Peck CrOp

Feeling the downtown vibe, I took a Mad Men turn and opted for his Pinon scarf neck blouse and Clovis skater skirt with a rust lace overlay. I love high waisted anything. Accentuating the waist is most flattering on all figures.

Gypsy 05 Jumper

For my second look, I brought my own Gypsy 05 jewel toned jumper. Jumpsuits are a no brainer outfit. Add some accessories and you are done:) Again these are behind these scenes shots but you can get a good idea of the accessories I added.

A New Kind of Plaid

Torn by Ronny Kobo

I’m kind of obsessing over this Torn by Ronny Kobo plaid dress right now. Plaid has been a big trend for a while now. This dress gives us a ultra-femme, flattering feel to the usual men’s plaid button down shirt. I’ve styled it two ways today.

For my first look, I styled a night on the town, by adding some sassy purple caged stilettos and yellow jeweled clutch. For my second look, I took a note from the Chanel Fall/Winter 2014 show and gave the dress a street style look with a pair of leopard calf hair high-tops. As a woman who runs around in sky high heels all day, I’m loving the growing acceptance of flats/trainers being fashionable. Good enough for Karl, good enough for me:)

Make it simple, but significant!

Balloon

Lighting was less than optimal for today’s impromptu photo shoot but I saw a heart shaped balloon and decided to run with it… literally! I am so obsessed with this classic silk dress by Tucker. I have only had it two weeks and I’ve already wore it twice!! Repeat offender here. It’s so simple and the classic style reminded me of my Mimi- The Billie in FashionBillie.

Hollywood Tape…A Girls Best Friend

Marilyn may say diamonds are a girl’s best friend… But I say, Hollywood Tape is a girl’s best friend!!

hollywood-fashion-tape-46

Hollywood Tape won my affections after struggling to transform a leather top into a faux crop. I tried pinning, tucking and even double sided packing tape people!! I was on a mission to crop that top. As a last ditch effort I grabbed my Hollywood Tape. This tape is very thin, double sided and great to hold pieces in place. I normally use it to secure low cut shirts or delicate fabrics so didn’t expect much. To my surprise it secured my leather together like a pro! On top of that it stayed tightly fastened all night and in extremely warm weather.

This is a fashion secret I had to share with you! Hollywood Tape is safe on skin and fabrics. I’ve found it useful in securing those pesky wrap dresses, belts that don’t want to lay and even a client’s over the knee boot that just wouldn’t stay up. Hollywood Tape is extremely affordable and should probably be called miracle tape but I guess Hollywood will do.

Houston Gems

This little island we call Houston has so many secret treasures to find!  While out shopping for a new client, I recently stumbled across a few gems to share with you!

First and foremost breakfast!!  A girl must gain her strength before shopping.  What better to do it with than “wings and waffles”, at The Breakfast Klub!

From the moment you arrive you are greeted with a smile and a “Good morning, Sugar”.    They might have the friendliest staff in town!  Almost like a hot new night club, you wait in a line outside until the “Klub” has a table ready for you.  We arrived early around 9a, so we only had about a 30 min wait.  From biscuits and gravy to French toast, every bite was delicious.  The Breakfast Club brings Houstonians from all walks of life together to enjoy two simple things, good home cooking and southern hospitality.   The Breakfast Klub is worth the wait!

Only a few blocks away lies the eclectic Mid-Main.

Here I found My Flaming Heart.

After a full day of shopping, we stopped in to Double Trouble to reenergize.  They are known around Mid-Main for their iced coffee and cocktails.  I can vouch it is delicious!!

How To: DIY Cutoff Shorts

Festival season is upon us!  Crop your tops and shred your denim.  Festival Fashion is here!!

Free Press Summer Fest 2013 hit Houston last weekend.  I was in a mad dash to find some retro denim cut offs to complete my boho outfit.  Then I realized there is no need to rush out and buy a overpriced pair of cut off shorts.  I grabbed my favorite pair of old (high-waisted), worn jeans and made my own.  You can too!

Tip:  Find a pair that have frayed at the bottom or around the pockets.  This is a sign that they will give you the best frayed look when you cut them.

Before you go getting scissor happy here are a few rules to follow.

  1. Try your pants on.
  2. Measure and mark about one inch longer than you “think” you want your shorts.
  3. Start at the seam where your outer thigh would hit and cut diagonally down towards the inner thigh area. I like to then cut the front part of the short about a half inch higher than the back.  This is optional but avoids the mom jean look.
  4. Try them on again.
  5. When you have the desired length.  Cut tiny, tiny snips along the bottom of the shorts.  This will help with the fraying.
  6. Wash + Dry as many times as you want until you get the maximum fringe effect!
