Spring layering is not something I am accustomed to, being a Texas girl. It’s usually so hot in Houston, even thinking of layering is laughable. Also, for a girl I always felt layering adds layers, which adds size, which no girl wants. Being here in New York I’ve had more of an opportunity to experiment with layering and have found if done the right way, it can add a whole other fashionable “layer” to your style.
The key is to start with a great base. The lightweight undershirt in my look today adds dimension with it’s high-low cut, without adding bulk. I then layered with a robins egg blue cropped sweatshirt, white skinny jean and accessorized with a floppy fedora.
I’ve picked some great base tops below that will have you layering in no time!

I have found the best nail place and manicurist IN THE WORLD!!!! Paint Box caught my attention because of their really creative nail art. They have really trendy yet sophisticated options, no flowers and palm trees here. If you live in New York or are even here on vacation, you have to try them out.
My manicurist Elissa gave me the perfect Rhi, Rhi inspired pointy cat like claws. If you get your nails did on the reg, you feel my pain, as to how hard it is to get someone who can do this right. In fact, she shaped them so perfectly, I skipped the cracked gold overlay nail art and left them with the base coat only. Funny enough it’s called “I need a tan”, which I do. These are my real nails btw.
FashionBillie Bit: Make your appointment a few days ahead of time. They do book up.

I’m falling for fedoras, especially this navy wool asymmetrical style I found in a great hat shop in Soho. The slight swag of the hat is so Bonnie & Clyde prohibition gangster. It also really fits one of my personal style secrets… Sometimes showing less is more. The hat gives a bit of mystery. Not to mention you can be ready in a flash, dirty hair and all!!
FashionBillie Bit: High-waisted bell-bottoms have my heart and it just so happens they are on point with 2015 trends. The high waist conceals any of those trouble areas, while the cut of bell bottom or (flare) works at lengthening those legs! What’s not to love?

My snow day searching for the Dumbo Owls was quite an adventure!! We went over the river and through the woods, to find the amazing street artist Craig Anthony Miller’s Owl mural in Dumbo, Brooklyn. It was a blizzard outside which made it all the more exciting. There is something so exhilarating about the chilling wind on your skin, silence in the streets, the newness of it all.
Out of nowhere a white field covered in snow appears, shining brightly across the street we see the owls…
Camel, Cream and White all over:) The simplicity of these three pieces make them fit together effortlessly. It also makes todays look very easy for you to recreate with pieces you already have in your closet. Make sure to add your own flare with a statement shoe.
FashionBillie Bit: Cheetah vs. Leopard… Cheetah print is a solid black print. Leopard is the partially closed black print with brown spot in the center. I’m a leopard girl myself.
Thank You, Tami Eiserer
One of the many amazing things about New York is all of their yummy and diverse food. After a day of exploring I stumbled upon what I thought was a quaint cafe. To my surprise it was one of America’s most acclaimed and popular restaurants, Union Square Cafe!
Their Whole Wheat Pappardelle and Cara Cara Orange Salad is to die for!! They also make a mean Old Fashioned. The perfect drink to warm you on these cold New York Days. Make sure to check out Union Square Cafe while in the City, they serve American cuisine using local ingredients.

Happy Thursday!!! First I want to apologize for being on a bit of a blogging hiatus as my life has recently been a whirl wind of change. I’ve decided to leave my home in Houston and take a bite out of the big apple!!
Several years ago I started FashionBillie as a creative outlet from my job in advertising and also way to share my style tips and insights with all of you amazing friends. What started out as a little blog has led me to building my own styling business and finding my true calling. Exciting right?
I’m at the top of my career as an advertising executive for CBS-TV, have a great styling business and amazing friends….yet something was missing. In comes JJ Moses, (ex Houston Texans football player and now motivational speaker). JJ said something that was my ah-ha moment. He said, and this is not a direct quote, “sometimes when everything is going well, when nothing is broken, you need to break it”. To me this meant success can lead to complacency. Sometimes you have to break what’s going well, to get something better and continue growing.
After much deliberation I quit my secure job in advertising, sold everything I owned and decided to “break, what wasn’t broken”. I hope you will follow me on my journey!
