How To: DIY Cutoff Shorts

Festival season is upon us!  Crop your tops and shred your denim.  Festival Fashion is here!!

Free Press Summer Fest 2013 hit Houston last weekend.  I was in a mad dash to find some retro denim cut offs to complete my boho outfit.  Then I realized there is no need to rush out and buy a overpriced pair of cut off shorts.  I grabbed my favorite pair of old (high-waisted), worn jeans and made my own.  You can too!

Tip:  Find a pair that have frayed at the bottom or around the pockets.  This is a sign that they will give you the best frayed look when you cut them.

Before you go getting scissor happy here are a few rules to follow.

  1. Try your pants on.
  2. Measure and mark about one inch longer than you “think” you want your shorts.
  3. Start at the seam where your outer thigh would hit and cut diagonally down towards the inner thigh area. I like to then cut the front part of the short about a half inch higher than the back.  This is optional but avoids the mom jean look.
  4. Try them on again.
  5. When you have the desired length.  Cut tiny, tiny snips along the bottom of the shorts.  This will help with the fraying.
  6. Wash + Dry as many times as you want until you get the maximum fringe effect!

Catwalk to Sidewalk: Nautical Stripes Mix With Must Have Summer Shirt

There are a million ways to wear this great summer shirt and after seeing the Tory Burch Summer look book I had to share more! From my neon must have summer shirt to nautical stripes and mixing patterns hop on the boat for a clash of trends.  Runway looks are like movies, a exaggeration of reality that we can put our own twist on.  Take this great Gracia striped blazer and pair with my must-have summer shirt and high wasted Kimchi Blue printed shorts for ultimate spring/summer style.

Whoever said stripes aren’t flattering was wearing the wrong stripes!  I have found one simple stripe rule to live by is the larger the clothing size, the smaller the stripe.  Full Stripes ahead!

Fashion in a Flash: Easy Like Sunday Morning

Sometimes the easiest way to be fashionable is to play off the vibe you are feeling that very day.  Some days you may feel like dressing to the nines, and others not a dab of makeup.  So this weekend when I caught myself humming “Easy, easy like Sunday morning”, I threw on a pair of jeans, tank, hat and wedges.

I love Rachel Ray’s :30 min meals, so consider this my ode to her with a :30 min outfit!  By taking a pair of skinny jeans out of the closet and rolling the bottoms I created a new pair of Capri pants and paired it with a high low tunic. I’m really loving the high low tunic look of many shirts right now but a plain tee always works as well. To polish off the look, I added a thicker belt to play up the menswear vibe of my fedora and an amazing pair of STYLE STEAL wedges.

What is your favorite “Easy like Sunday Morning” outfit?
